The museum is excited to announce that preliminary research is underway for our next temporary exhibit titled “Mighter Than the Sword” Running from August 2016-July 2017, this exhibit will examine the history and evolution of African American literature and writing from the 18th century to the present – from autobiographical slave narratives to the creative explosion of the Harlem Renaissance to modern-day authors, poets, and playwrights. The role of literature and illustration in shaping public opinion, both positive and negative, will also be explored. The exhibition will feature both well-known and local wordsmiths.
This exhibit will feature objects and images that will enhance visitors’ learning experiences such as books, illustrations, and artifacts related to authors. To create this display, we will rely on our own collection as well as seek loans from other institutions and collectors. If you or someone you know have any materials that you would consider loaning for the run of the exhibit please don’t hesitate to contact our Curator Brianna Wright at email@example.com or 319-862-2101 x 277
