Join the AAMI and local artist Jean Berry at 6:30pm as we present “Captured in Black and White: The Work of Jean Berry.” Jean Berry will speak about her process and inspiration. Ms. Berry examines the daily lives of ordinary people to communicate the deeper recognition of the contributions and influence of African Americans on modern culture. It is this interpretation that she translates into beautiful art using charcoal, black and white contrasting, and other found and recycled objects.

Jean Berry is an internationally recognized artist whose work has been displayed in Paris, Jamaica, and Belize, as well as numerous galleries throughout Iowa.

Ready for some family fun? Come out and learn about how art and science are two sides of the same coin at “Painting Like a Pro!” From 1:00pm to 3:00pm, learn about scientists like George Washington Carver and Percy Julian who, among many things, both dabbled in the manufacturing of paint. We will also be learning about various African American painters and sculptors and making a small artistic creation of our own that can be taken home or given as a gift. Be warned, we will be getting a little bit messy so come dressed for the occasion.

We hope to see you there!
