Did you know that March is women’s history month?! What began as only a week long commemoration of women’s history in California in 1981, has become a nationally recognized month dedicated to the celebration of the history of women and of their contributions to society and culture. In honor of women’s history month, the AAMI has a case of women’s church-going hats on display in the front lobby. These beautiful hats represent a rich tradition of African American women’s fashion and church-going wear throughout the twentieth century.

While doing some research on the history of Women’s History Month, I came across a short video produced by the History Channel, entitled Humble Beginnings, which presents the humble beginnings of prominent African American women….I thought you might enjoy it!
