Guided Tour: Endless Possibilities

Walk through the gallery doors and step into Africa. Your tour guide will take you from the vibrant cultures of Western Africa on a voyage through slavery, the Underground Railroad, segregation, and Civil Rights. Make history alive: play an African drum, see artifacts from the coal mining town of Buxton, or give a speech from behind Barack Obama’s podium.

The Only One

Have you ever been the only one in a group?  The only one with glasses?  The only boy?  The only girl?  This exhibit explores the experiences of African Americans who have been the “only one” in a group.  Through photos, artifacts, and oral histories, we’ll explore school segregation and integration, Jim Crow laws, and the everyday lives of Iowans in the 20th century.

January 16, 2012 – January 2013
