What happens to an item once it's donated to our collection?

We are frequently asked what happens to an item once it is donated to the AHMCCI. As soon as an item is donated it is assigned a number, a deed of gift is sent out to the donor and a complete description of the item including a photo of the item is entered into the computer data base. The item is then cleaned, repairs are made, if necessary, a tag is added that states the object’s number and the item is then properly packed and placed on the shelf. Curator Susan Kuecker takes several Training seminars each year in order to remain up to date on the latest recommended techniques. Storage materials are closely monitored to ensure that they meet current museum standards. The collections storage room is kept dim in order to minimize light damage on sensitive artifacts. The storage room is also kept at constant temperature and humidity levels that are monitored three times each day to ensure the safety of the artifacts. Items in storage are used by researchers and loaned to other museums. Items in storage are also used during changing exhibits.
