Theron Trowbridge was a deacon in the Congregational Church at Denmark and very active in the Underground Railroad. This home was built by Trowbridge in 1838 with a small secret room for hiding escaping slaves behind a bookcase in an upstairs bedroom. A favorite story told about Trowbridge in Denmark relates that a woman once arrived at his home crying, as she had had to leave her baby behind in Missouri. Trowbridge left and returned with the infant two days later.
