During the Depression, it was especially difficult for African American men to find work of any kind. With the arrival of the “New Deal” under Franklin Roosevelt in 1933, government programs provided employment for thousands in Iowa with either the Works Progress Administration (WPA) or the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
