During the Depression, it was especially difficult for African
American men to find work of any kind. With the arrival of the New
Deal under Franklin Roosevelt in 1933, government programs
provided employment for thousands in Iowa with either the Works
Progress Administration (WPA) or the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC).
