| Title IX of the Civil Rights Act enacted in 1974 forced
colleges to offer sports opportunities to women. While it was rare
for Regents institutions in Iowa to offer sports opportunities to
women prior to this, many of the small colleges in the Iowa Conference
offered women sports opportunities early in the 20th Century. Ruth
Collins played Field Hockey at Coe College all four years she attended
that institution in the early 1920's.
