What is Juneteenth?
The Juneteenth Festival is the oldest known celebration of the end of slavery in America. The Emancipation Proclamation issued January 1, 1863, freed slaves in areas covered by the Union army. Unfortunately, in particularly isolated areas, owners kept word of the Emancipation Proclamation from their slaves so that they would not flee. On June 19, 1865, some of the last slaves in America were freed when word of the Emancipation Proclamation at last reached Confederate Galveston, Texas. Since that day, Juneteenth has been celebrated in American for 140 years. The celebration started in Galveston, and then spread across the Southwest and up the Mississippi River into the Midwest. Iowans began celebrating Juneteenth in the 1990's and it is now a festival that is celebrated every year.
What Will Happen?

The next day is our celebration day which starts off with the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation and a posting of the colors. Musicians, singers, and dancers will perform gospel, jazz, hip-hop, blues, and more. There will be a curator's tour of the exhibit gallery at the Museum.
